In case you’re already using a custom tracking template to track certain parameters for your ad clicks you will have to combine it with ClickGUARD’s. You can do this manually or by using the convenient merge tool in Settings.

Using the template merge tool

The easiest way to get to the merged tracking template is to use the merge tool in Settings. You'll find it by unchecking "I want ClickGUARD to automatically set Google Ads tracking template" and clicking on the "Custom Template Merge Tool" button:

Simply follow the on-screen instructions to get the merged template:

Manually merging templates

You can merge your tracking template with ClickGUARD's in 3 simple steps.

Step 1 - Get your ClickGUARD tracking template

Visit Settings and uncheck "I want ClickGUARD to automatically set Google Ads tracking template". Then copy your custom tracking template. It will look something like this:

https://io.clickguard.com:552/t/k7jrYLS9hY7p/5Mk8hT1B?cg=track&kw={keyword}&nw={network}&cp={campaignid}&ag={adgroupid}&ad={creative}&kd={targetid}&dv={device}&mt={matchtype}&pl={placement}&rd={random}&tg={lpurl}

You’ll notice how all parameters used by ClickGUARD are 2-letter URL parameters. This will help you differentiate them from your own custom tracking parameters.

Step 2 - Prepare your custom tracking template

Grab your current (or desired) tracking template from your account, campaign or ad group. It might look something like this:

{lpurl}?campaign={campaignid}&keyword={keyword}

Step 3 - Combine the two templates

To combine the two templates use the following simple formula:

Add a "%26" character to the end of ClickGUARD's tracking template
Remove “{lpurl}?” from your custom tracking template
Replace all "&" characters in your custom tracking template with "%26" character
Paste the rest of your custom tracking template after the added "%26" character

Here's the formula:

CGT + “%26” + ( CT - “{lpurl}?” ) = MT
CGT = ClickGUARD template, CT = custom template, MT = merged template

The end result will look like this:

https://io.clickguard.com:552/t/k7jrYLS9hY7p/5Mk8hT1B?cg=track&kw={keyword}&nw={network}&cp={campaignid}&ag={adgroupid}&ad={creative}&kd={targetid}&dv={device}&mt={matchtype}&pl={placement}&rd={random}&tg={lpurl}%26campaign={campaignid}%26keyword={keyword}

How do I know that my template is working?

Make sure you test the resulting tracking template when you paste the combined template in Google Ads configuration. Google Ads will simulate ad clicks and confirm that the tracking URL is working. You will also see those test clicks in ClickGUARD tagged as “INVALID” as they are coming from Google’s ad bot.

What if some of my parameters are the same as ClickGUARD’s?

In case you have a custom parameter that matches any of the parameters set by ClickGUARD you don't have to use another parameter in your custom template.

What if I’m tracking parameters on campaign / ad group level?

If you’re using a custom tracking template on campaign or ad group level you’ll have to combine those with ClickGUARD’s tracking template as well since tracking templates on a lower level override the one that’s set on the account level.

Alternatively, you can use the URL suffix option or custom parameters in Google Ads.

What about parallel tracking?

You can read about parallel tracking here.
